Now, we come to the judging.  Much depends on the outcome of the
judges' opinions through-out the year.  Breeders go to several shows each
year.  At each show, those winning breeders/chinchillas will be given not
only points, but prestige.   At the end of each year, the points/wins are
added up and the one breeder that has accumulated the most points, is
awarded the title of  'breeder of the year'.

It is the judges' job to compare each chinchilla within each color and
age group.  After this is done in all colors, they must then, compare all the
#1A (color group champ) & #1B (reserve color group champ) placed
chinchillas against each other, to choose the over-all best chinchillas that
day.  The best one, in the judges' opinion, becomes the Grand Champion
and the next in line is the Reserve Champion of that show.  One thing
must be kept in mind ... when a chinchilla is judged, it is judged on it's
appearance/quality shown that day.

Each chinchilla show, each year, awards each breeder points, according
to the level his/her chinchillas reach in each show.   At the end of the
chinchilla year, the breeder with the most points becomes the "breeder of
the year".  In this way, no breeder can win this position at any one show.
The breeders that do win/rank high are considered the best among
current breeders at that show.

Why is this title important?  With the title comes the acknowledgment
of their peers, that they have shown their talents, skills, knowledge and
hard work.  That they have been able to breed the best chinchillas, over
all, that year.  This title is not taken lightly, for not only do they have the
title and the prestige,  but, the breeder is able to place a higher dollar
value on his/her chinchillas because of the quality of the chinchilla.

Much goes into the judging for each chinchilla.  The size, shape, color
clarity, hue and fur quality, as well as grooming and preparation are all
considered.  There are many things that can effect the decision of the
judges, both for and against a chinchilla.  When it gets down to the last
group, these are the 'cream of the crop' and often the judges must
'nit-pick' to decide which animal is the best, in their opinion.  The least
little thing wrong, or appearing wrong to the judge, often decides the
outcome.
